The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 is awarded for the discovery of Green Fluorescent Protein. GFP turns bright green when you shed certain lights on it. Today these tiny molecular flashlights are used to study any and all processes in cells and living organisms.
An accidental discovery on a nighttime walk led one scientist and his team to wonder: How many mammals glow under ultraviolet light? The list keeps growing, but scientists still aren’t sure why these furry creatures glow.
