I Grew Up in a White Family and I Had a Normal Background
I grew up in what was Rhodesia. At the time my father was there because he developed the first multiracial medical school in Africa. And so it was absolutely normal for me to be cycling to school at the age of five or six on empty roads. I remember falling down a hole and meeting a cobra and I don't think I've ever jumped so high and so fast getting out of it as possible. It's extraordinary when I think about her now, going out into the bush on her own as a white doctor - but that's the one I grew up in.
