CHAPTER

Exploring Manager Emotions in a Casual Setting

This chapter delves into a new podcast series that focuses on the emotional dynamics of management and teamwork. The hosts, with a history of collaboration, aim to address workplace emotions in a relaxed, coffee-shop setting that invites deep conversation.

And a bit like this one, I started to come here behind the mic less regularly. And eventually I paused it. But then I came back to it with a co-host. And this co-host is a man called Tim Burgess. He's based, well, he's in Australia. We'd already worked together on a series for 21st Century Work Life. And so we already knew each other. He thinks a lot about his own development as a person, as manager. And so he has lots of experience in the management space, running his own company. And also he's thought a lot about it, reads a lot around the topic. He's a good listener, et cetera. So we've been just picking themes and topics. And then the other, well, the other day, about a month ago, Tim said, hey, why don't we do a series on manager emotions? Just these emotions that come up, how we experience them as individuals, how we experience them as managers, as professionals, and then what do we do when they come up in the team or how we see the team experiencing it. So that's what we're doing at the moment. And it's very difficult because we're talking about emotions. So all the stories we're bringing are emotional. We've only done two episodes so far, but it's really interesting because I think we have quite strong opinions about these emotions and what to do with them. So it's different dynamic. And then as editor, I've been thinking of what I could do differently. These episodes, basically, the idea is that it's Tim and I talking casually about a topic as if we were having coffee. The idea is that the listener listens to them over coffee. They're 20 to 30 minutes long, more like 30 minutes. But they start with a little bit of background noise and Tim and I just talking and then about a minute and a half we're like oh oh we'd better welcome our listeners oh hello everyone welcome we don't have the traditional music at the beginning and the welcome at the beginning but I think for the emotions we're doing something slightly different just because it's a bit different so I've played with a different cafeteria sound I wanted to maybe dip in and out like the cafeteria background noise from one bit to another.
