The assassination of Ramesses III in 1155 BC sparked a series of succession crises, short and ineffectual reigns. In essence, power devolved away from the kings and their closest officials to the various localities that made up Egypt. For every powerful ruler like Ramesses II, there were several like the boy king Tutankhamun who were shuffled onto the throne by the army and officialdom.
