Patton was in favor of tying up 80,000 troops to the Brittany ports. He's a big set pace and he comes unstuck with it; Montgomery didn't want to take too many chances. German generals would frequently say that Patton saved their rear end numerous times because he didn't follow through. The U.S. army had learned quite a bit from Germany by the end of the war.
