Males protecting the eggs is not as rare. Males keeping them on their body is fairly rare. It's thought that this rarity could be that transferring the eggs is more of a risk than just letting the males guard the eggs, like that's not really a risk factor. But transferring from one body to another s a risk that you drop the eggs, that they don't get transferred correctly,. That also seems like it may take more specific conditions. The transitioning of the eggs is actually a very key part of their mating. And so there's a courtship that goes on with many signathods to coordinate the male and female f the mating pair.
