If he was a massive asshole and left her life in smoking ruins the way he talks about leaving other women, maybe she'll kind of forgive him. It kind of depends on what the reason for the breakup was. And yeah, we can get into whether doing some nice volunteering at an old age, how likely fixes issues. But bettering yourself by volunteering is just rationalization. That's not bettering yourself.
