In the last few decades, society has decided that maybe marriage is too sacred. So we now have two places where a sacred plays an important role by precisely by eliminating detail. The very thing that makes it good also makes it bad, unfortunately. These are in big shared social projects, like a war or democracy. And we have long-term projects, even of individual human beings.
