Frederick madden acquired the lewis chesmer chessmen in 18 31. They are bought by the antiquaries in edinburgh for the museum. But they become an emblem of loss, something taken from scotland. In two thousand and nine, the scottish nationalist government wanted them to be sent home. And these norwegian high mediaeval chess pieces had somehow become part of scScottish identity.
