The war of the third coalition in italy started on a bit of astray note. Archduke charles had a plan for an offensive into french controlled territory, but he soon learned that napoleon was in germany with the bulk of the french army. Charles knew messena would attack, even though the french were outnumbered, they would be compelled by their need to delay his retreat.
