Time zones matter because peak demand for electricity is extremely time sensitive. When you can move it across time zones, you smooth out the fact that contemporary urban societies tend to have demand fluctuations of 150% every 24 hours. The example of the one that is so far the most successful and is also expanding rapidly is NSOE. That grid incorporates not only Europe but a good chunk of states that are candidates for joining the European Union.
