The Importance of Relevance in Teaching

Thomas: The idea of relevance to me is a little confusing because for myself, at least, sometimes what I'm most interested in is not relevant at all to my life. And so it's kind of a bad idea to bring that in to pedagogy and to inculcate students into this idea that you should be intrinsically interested in something for it to have any value. "By doing this dumbing down in the current process, we end up stereotyping and encouraging the very racial separatism," he says.
