In 1574, Melville oversaw the launch of a new curriculum at Glasgow. He then moved on to St. Andrews, setting up similar reforms in 1579. The aggressive adoption of humanist methods ruffled feathers amongst scholastics. His combination of Protestant fervor and humanist pedagogy has invited comparison to Luther's associate Melanchthon.
