What Are the Chimps Doing?

Chimps are making vocalizations and this is some work from Cedric Girabutos and Emiliano Zaccarela. The papers called chimpanzees produce diverse vocal sequences with ordered and recombinatorial properties. They think that the chimps are recombining the elements of their vocalizations. That's what they think is going on. But how would you be able to tell that from just random meaningless sounds?
