Philip saw Aratus as a moderating figure on his more ambitious tendencies. The king's successes in the Social War had gone to his head, and his relationship with Aratus began to sour. As a consequence for his failure against Rome and the revolt of Messini, Philip increasingly began to crack down hard on the Greeks. If we are to believe Polybius and Plutarch, the Antigone ruler directed much of his ire towards his former companions, Aratus the Elder and the Younger.
