The audience here at the hay festival might be wondering why we have a large sack of rice here onstag yet. This isn't some strange rider - it's a way to try and visualize just the diversity of life on earth. There's about 50 grains of rice in a gram. Which means that this ten kilogram bag of rice here contains about half a million grades of rice which is quite handy for us. If we get 20 of these sacks of rice, we can represent ten million species on earth. So if you imagine you've got all ofthese sacks of rice lined up here
