Kierkegaard divided his works into two streams. One was, you could say sociological or historical and then another one is theological and ethical. So it's easy to misinterpret him if you only read one stream. He also rejected the kind of abstract ivory tower approach to thinking things through. His goal is to stimulate his readers to respond ethically to come and exercise their own freedom. In fact, before we started recording James and I briefly discussed Ted Kuzinski - he's not the Unabomber, but the Oklahoma City Bomber.
