How to Give Grades to Students in Groups of Four
When I ask my students to help each other develop their thesis statements in groups of four, they also learn and practice by helping others do it. Don't grade the work. Students know that making mistakes is part of the process. They won't be penalized. There's no final draft in the traditional sense. A student can always work on something to improve it. When we give grades, we encourage students to either work only towards a grade or cheat towards a grade. Neither of them sends a good message about the importance of becoming lifelong learners.
