Composting at its most basic is helping plant waste and food scraps break down into this sort of like rich fluffy nutrient filled material called hummus. When a compost pile heats up, it's the result of oxidization which some energy is escaping in the form of heat. The bacteria and fungi relationship is a little bit different with that hummus layer because of how fungi can move nutrients throughout the soil.
