The Course is calling us to this unconditional nature of forgiveness. In the Spirit of Joy section, it says that the Holy Spirit is the motivation for miracle mindedness. God plays the Holy Spirit in your mind and although you can keep it asleep, you can't obliterate it. So we always have something, we always have him to lean on to elevate our perception.
