The Importance of Missions in Nonprofits
David Wertimer is Deputy Director of the Pacific Northwest Initiative with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He left his job as a nonprofit executive director because he was putting himself above clients' needs. Measuring performance through dollars raised, membership, or people served are obviously important but don't show whether a nonprofit is achieving its mission nor adequately helping those it set out to.
