The main character becomes obsessed with the glass bead game, which occupies a kind of ambiguous place within castalia. The book is written from the point of view of a biographer who is also one of these scholar monks. It's funny, because the narrator is writing the biography of a person but he, at the beginning says, this is very unusual. We don't usually name people. But in this case it's very important that we do speak a little bit to the dviduality of this particular person.
