We are in very much an escalatory spiral over Taiwan. The prospect of unification with China is increasingly distasteful to voters and leaders on the island. And I think that that tendency has led to a lack of discipline in terms of US efforts to support Taiwan, he says.

There’s rare bipartisan consensus in Washington: China is a threat to be countered. Cornell professor Jessica Chen Weiss says the American approach could lock both countries into an escalatory spiral.
