The director of Ghostwatch says she wanted to make the show as close to live TV as possible. Leslie Manning watched a lot of live TV and documentaries in preparation for the project. She included real people on camera talking about their own ghost stories. The team also decided to use very well known and respected BBC hosts who viewers are used to seeing doing interviews or documentary programs.

On Halloween night, in 1992, an unusual television special aired on the BBC. Nobody expected what happened next. “The technicians were looking up at the big screen in the lobby, saying to each other, ‘My God, what's going on in Studio One?'”
