Black Women in Shipyards

After the song, the women working in factories and shipyards became known as rosies. Employers around the country initially refused to hire black women. Many employers held out, attempting to only hire white women or white men until they were forced to do otherwise. An estimated 600 thousand black women worked in shipyards and factories, in computer science and as clerks in office.
