Black Women in Shipyards

After the song, the women working in factories and shipyards became known as rosies. Employers around the country initially refused to hire black women. Activis pressured president franklin roosevelt to sign an executive order that b and racial discrimination in the defense industry. Many employers held out, attempting to only hire white women or white men until they were forced to do otherwise. An estimated 600 thousand black women worked in shipyards and factories, in computer science and as clerks in office.
