How to Diagnose Malaria in a Returning Traveler

The incubation period, time to onset of malaria symptoms, in most cases ranges as soon as seven days after beaten by the infected mosquito. If initial blood smears test negative phleplasmodium species, but malaria remains a high possibility, the smear should be repeated every 12 to 24 hours during a 72-hour period. Serologic testing, also called as RDT or rapid diagnostic test, generally is not helpful. A GI PCR and testing for SARS-CoV-2 may be useful if there are respiratory symptoms.
