The Duchy Is a Great Expansion for Co-Op and Root in General
I feel like the duchy is a little bit of everything it is a shame that what I love about the river folk expansion recommending it for new players is that it comes with the clockwork thing. If you are just kind of excited about root in general you're not going to go wrong getting an expansion in addition to the base game. You have so many choices with root right approach it however you want and find the ways that it engages you but I basically I'll just never let anyone get away with saying that they played root like maybe a small handful of times and then they just didn't like it obviously that's a valid thing to say.
