Ennius is remembered in the tradition as the person who first imports Homer's great meter of the hexameter into Latin, so that he can write a great national epic. He may not have had quite the freedom to speak, as he did, had he not been a member of Skippyo's. The satirist is writing in the same meter as epic. So, all the way through the Roman tradition, the satirist has got to sign up to the idea that epic is the other voice, is the enemy.
