CHAPTER

The Influence of Persia on Jewish Apocalyptic Thought

I used to think that Zoroastrianism, religion of Persia, affected Judaism because the Jews were under Persian domination and apocalyptic thought emerged within Judaism after the Persian domination. But I don't think so anymore. One reason is that Jewish apocalyptic thought doesn't develop until long after the Persian period. And it is just as possible in my mind that the development of apocalypticism was an internal Jewish development with the understanding that these prophets that had been so popular for so long simply didn't get it right about how there's so much suffering among the people of God.
