The Ground Rules for Talking on Polling Day

There's an off-com rule that says you just don't talk about the issues on polling day, but there is of course quite a long tradition of it. The BBC's own editorial guidelines and our election guidelines say it as well. So we steer clear of all of those sorts of things. We do it because off-com say so. It's not just a British thing. There's an Irish moratorium in Irish elections which comes in at two o'clock in the afternoon the day before. France is nearly 48 hours. But it is particularly complicated in local government because obviously, you know, there are gray areas.
