Hong Kong was under Japanese military occupation for a few years during World War II. Bruce's father invited his sister and her five kids to live with them in Hong Kong after the war. Because of collapsed housing prices they were able to acquire some real estate for their cheap. But even if it is true that the Li family was better off than many people in Hong Kong at this time, they weren't exactly swimming in gold.
