In 18 32, Irving joined henry levitt ellsworth on an expedition to what's now missouri, oklahoma and arkansas. President andrew jackson had taskedEllsworth with inspecting land that was going to be used for the foreced relocation of indigenous peoples under the indian removal act of 18 30. The relocation later became known as the trail of tears, and it forced tens of thousands of indigenous people to leave their homes and move west. While on this expedition, irving visited sack leader black hawk, who, at the time, was imprisoned for his role in the black hawk war,. which had taken place earlier in 18 32. In a letter to a sister,
