What Will Make Man Happy?
Aristotle's own words indicate that a life of this sort would exceed what is human. That activity does not exhaust the formality of happiness as applied to man's nature. The moral virtues which perfect him more properly as a man, body and soul bring all his powers under activity in accord with reason. And these virtues also bear notes of happiness in themselves without mere subordination as means to contemplation. He needs sufficient external goods for either of these sorts of virtuous activities. In one sense virtue is a good answer in another contemplation but in a way the most complete answer is a city.
