The Great Mongol Shana May

The Shana May was principally transmitted orally and that means that there are many, many versions. The earliest surviving illustrated Shana May come from the period of post dating the mongol invasion of Iran. When open, it would have been close to one and a half meters across. Now this is a manuscript which was made in the court workshops. It's a state enterprise that created it with state artists, a state location, state funds. Something about it is not the work of a private patron, but the work of the machinery of government if you like.
