General du merbion was finally replaced, no doubt to the great relief of everyone involved. The jacobins had kept him around because he was scared of them. He retired from the army in 17 95 and died in 17 97. On paper, he left behind a distinguished record. In reality, he spent the most g ous moments of his career in bed.
