The Animal Does Not Want to Answer, Because It Never Wanted to Say, and Then It Left Silent
Mitya sees forgetfulness not as a sort of negative force, that is to say, as the intropic or counterbalancing force to remembering. He wants nothing other than to live like the animal, neither bored nor in pain. M nita locates this in our own a perception that the animals live unhistorically. And historical awareness is the source of our self knowledge. We intuit that the animal does not experience this and always slips into forgetfulness.
