I want to get back to this question of compromise. But before that, let me quote something from your piece, if i may, with the disclaimer that hitler is mentioned here. Hitler's starting premises are irreconcilable with our own, but his first commitments are also powerful appeals to real aspects of human nature. This is a world view grounded in grievance, suspicion and loath it may be hideous to contemplate, but it is coherent. And moreover, it is plausible and durable. I like this because it gets, i think, your fundamental argument, which is, sometimes there is no compromise to be had. Sometimes there is nothing to negotiate.
