The week became more salient in the 1800s because of wage labor. By early 20th century, there had been an increased push among wage laborers to have two-day weekends instead of just Sunday off. This was formalized when the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 made a 40-hour work week with a two-day weekend the norm and majority of American jobs.
