How to Help Obliged Students Learn Chinese

The reason you started learning a little language is not necessarily the reason you'll continue to learn a language. A highly motivated student can learn even when using poor methods. An unmotivated student can avoid learning despite the best methods. Aspirational learners, how can we connect with them? They need role models. It's finding people exposing them to people who are doing these interesting things with the language and who can speak Chinese. We try to expose them to Chinese culture, but also we've got to be careful what culture we're exposed to.
