Why Is India Not a Popular Tourist Destination?

I believe that india has the potential to become a genuine tourism super power. India is heaven for food lovers, vegetabians as well as non vegetabians. And indians are the most hospitable people in the world. Why can't we harness the turism economy? It will act as soft power for india and give many jobs. I'm not aware of religious stories. There may be some, but so yea, that's not what iam aware of. Ok, next question.
