The closest parallels are much closer to home than we often are comfortable acknowledging and are very recent in terms of human history. Some of the most objectively educated parts of the world have been enslaved peoples in a similar brutal fashion for the same kinds of protections. So it's important, like this isn't, there's nothing ancient or primitive about this.
