I think the thing that makes bridgeton stand out so much is is the sex, but also the casting. We have people of colour in regency gowns, in lead rolls - something we are not used to seeing. And then you also have the heritage of queen charlotte, i wis based on the real queen charlote. They were apparently, like rumours or something in the 19 forties that her ancestry may have had, e some african ethnicity in it. That made it seem sort of like less fluffy and less throw away.
