The Weirdness of Water Part 2/2
Curious Cases
The Heat Capacity of Water
If we're heating water up, it's not moving anywhere, is it? It's not all sort of getting up and walking to meters down the bath. So it means that this energy that we're giving the water is going into very random motions. And there's no knit movement of the substance. Everything going in one direction is balanced by everything going in another direction. But actually, it's going really fast. Water at about 20 degrees are moving at about 600 meters per second. If we think about a stream, the water molecules in the stream are only going at about one point four meters per second... so there's a huge difference in the speed of what’s happening.
