The Rise and Fall of the Highlanders
After the second Jacobite rebellion was defeated, I believe Tartan, bagpipes and Gaelic were outlawed. So it's maybe no surprise that those are such a big thing in the imaginary Scotland and Highlands that comes later in the writings of people like Walter Scott. That culture which had already been, had in the past been crushed, was brought back into the literature as an amazing sort of sailing point. The highlanders were later dealt with economic blow, I guess basically, partly by the arrival of capitalism replacing feudalism but also the fact that their lords and ladies were weighed down in London.
