Before there was country music, it was called hillbilly music. And a lot of theHillbilly music that became country music took a lot from minstrel shows and blackface shows. So even up until today, what we see, even in how we measure country music's success, it has a racialized history. The only genre left standing where it is completely verboten for you to see a non-white artist on the charts is country music.
