There's a way in which even the integrity of human nature apart from grace is kind of a casualty of the fall of man and of original sin. The preternatural gifts are not supernatural strictly, they're perfections of nature that are within the purview of nature but they're extra help still. Lacking those things, lacking infused knowledge, for example, or the gift of integrity whereby our emotions and powers operate harmoniously together. Without those gifts, those are states that are achievable, but not automatically and certainly not easily.
