The Battle for Water in Crimea
For half a century, most of the water in Crimea has been piped in from Ukraine through the North Crimean Canal. By 2017, Russian officials admitted that Crimea had really big problems because the area of irrigated land had shrunk by 92%. When I was in Crimea reporting on occupation in 2018, I was speaking to the farmers there and they were saying that they were forced to sell their lands and to move away because they didn't have enough water for their crops. So, the water issue was discussed in the highest levels in Kremlin and in Ukraine, our analysts and experts were warning that this could be the reason why Putin will decide to invade one of the reasons.
