Mikoyan and the Cuban Missile Crisis
In 1959, Khrushchev sent Mikoyan to Cuba to establish relations with the new socialist state. Although Mikoyan failed to alter the US's Berlin policy, he was hailed in the US for easing international tensions. He especially opposed giving the Cubans control over the nuclear missiles, but he didn't get his way. His son Sergo published an extensively documented book about the second Cuban Missile Crisis and his father's role in it.
