Jonathan Franzen: I think our own individual imprints have a lot to do with, you know, how we respond to the literature that's out there. In 2002, Jonathan Hansen reworked some 14 shorter pieces into a 300 page book titled, How to Be Alone. He then reworked the piece for clarity, and this transformative process, conferred more broadly on the other essays in the book. The intention of it as a record of a movement away from an angry and a frightened isolation toward Hansen's,. even a celebration of being a reader and a writer.
