The Evolution of Animal Experiments
The most common form of animal experimentation by the 19th century was epidemiological in nature, meaning the experiments were aimed towards the prevention of infectious disease. Scottish scientists Sir David Bruce focused on diseases that were problems for both humans and animals. His team developed a tetanus antitoxin and a tetanus vaccine that revolutionized wound care during World War I. Some of these breakthroughs benefited animals even more than they did humans. In fact, it was the fusion of human and animal medicine that made these breakthroughs in modern medicine possible.
